En ese punto de la historia, Netflix(dt) elected retrospective work that, by its own merits, transforms a birthday into an announcement: Charly García turns 75 and, on the same day, the platform confirms that it will produce a documentary about his life and work.

The announcement comes with the weight of a tribute and the promise of a retrospective. García, born in Buenos Aires on October 23, 1951, built a career that moved through rock and roll, pop, new wave, and a distinctly personal form of singer-songwriter composition. The documentary intends to trace not only that trajectory, but also the cultural place he occupies in Argentine music.

The direction will be Alejandro Hartmann, known for documentaries such as Carmel: ¿quién mató a María Marta? and El fotógrafo y el cartero: el crimen de Cabezas.

Production will be handled by Haddock Films, led by Vanessa Ragone. The company produced El secreto de sus ojos, which won the Oscar for best foreign language film in 2010.

A story told by Charly

One of the most striking features of the project is that García will not be a distant subject seen through archives and interviews alone. The filmmakers confirmed that he will tell his own story on camera, a decision that places the author of the songs at the center of the narrative.

That choice also suggests the documentary’s central tension: how to tell the story of an artist whose work is already woven into collective memory without reducing him to a monument or a list of hits. The mention of an earlier edition is especially relevant here: with every new stage of his career, García has renewed his relationship with listeners, and each return to the stage has carried the memory of earlier tours, records, and transformations.

The project is still in production, and Netflix has not confirmed a release date. For now, the announcement offers a promise rather than a finished product: the chance to hear, in García’s own voice, the account of a musician who turned everyday Argentine experience into songs that remain in circulation.

I expect the documentary to pay special attention to the less visible work behind the iconic figure: the decisions, doubts, and creative processes that accompany a career built over decades. A biography can celebrate the songs, but it can also show the person who made them. That is where I see the most interesting challenge, because Charly García’s legacy is enormous, yet his voice still has something intimate to add. If the film succeeds in joining those two planes, it will not only explain how an icon was made; it will allow us to meet, once again, the artist who keeps reinventing his relationship with the stage.
